Main asset

Native shrub with edible fruits, hosting an important auxiliary fauna. It is widely used in hedgerows.

Shrub with multiple trunks forming a tuft of 10-12 branches up to 3-4 m. The leaves are deciduous, heart-shaped toothed with a tip. Male catkins of 6 cm, yellowish, appear in February-March ; female flowers spikes are erected.

The hazelnut is an edible fruit. It contains a single seed, the almond. It is protected by an involucre before maturity (bracts).

Fruit varieties:

  • 'Geant de Halle' or 'Merveille de Bolwiller' : very hardy, late flowering, adapted to cold regions. Fruiting in September, large round fruit.
  • 'Nottingham': very productive variety with small elongated fruits, very thin skin easy to break.
  • 'Rouge de Zeller': purple young leaves becoming dark green. Good fruit.
  • 'Webb's Prize Cobb': large fruit, very productive.
  • Uses: Natural hedges, Orchard
