A basic plant for hedges, because of its evergreen foliage, its bright color, the absence of diseases or problems, and its quick growth. It behaves well in mixed hedgerows if combined with plants of comparable vigor (Elaeagnus, Ligustrum) otherwise it can choke slow growing plants
Remarks
Photinia are evergreen shrubs of East Asian origin. The fraseri hybrids were initially selected by Fraser nurseries (Alabama, 1955) and are a spontaneous cross of glabra (Japan) x serrulata (syn serratifolia, China). 'Red Robin' is the first bright colored selection in these hybrids, made in New Zealand in the '70s. 'Red Select" is a more recent variation of' Red Robin '.
'Red Select' is a natural mutation from 'Red Robin'. Its development and growth are very close, but its young leaves and shoots are of a darker red (almost purple), its leaves wider. Since the plant can grow up to 3 times a year depending on the growing conditions, it is often very colorful. In mid-spring, corymbs of single flowers with 5 petals, white, appear. The flowers are melliferous but rarely followed by fruits (it is an interspecific hybrid).
