Prune shortly in late winter to encourage the colorful new shoots.

This variety of Elderberry has the general characteristics of the species: vigorous, light gray wood, large pinnate leaves about 25 cm long and wide, with 5-7 leaflets. Flowering in large flat umbels is creamy white, and occurs in June. The flowers are bee-liked, and followed by black berries mature in summer. 

'Madonna' has largely edged bright yellow leaves.
